How do you estimate the level of education in the sphere of graphic design in Russia?

The majority of people I know start working before they graduate from an institution of higher education, and by the time they graduate, they already have a rather extensive portfolio. In principle, it is already enough to find a studio to one's liking. On the other hand, these are selective facts about specific people; the general situation is not visible to me from here, though design as a profession is a personal discipline, nevertheless.

At what stage of development is graphic design in Russia in comparison with other countries?

And what are these stages? I think that if you pay attention to design in specifically designated places, then everything will be alright, but if you look around in the street, there still is a lot of trash. It just crossed my mind that these are constants and their ratio is unique for each country.

The only thing that I cannot yet precisely describe is the Russian tradition in modern design. England or France can be characterized in a couple of words, with Russia it is not clear yet. It is too mixed up.

How greatly is Russian design influenced by the world design?

Design of other countries makes a strong impact on Russian design (whether it's good or bad). I think that Internet in the sphere of design is one big instrument of copying and studying other works. I don't think that Russian design strongly depends just on that, but the exchange of experience is the fact. In my opinion, it is good because these streams push one towards new ideas. Generally, in any way solitary life is worse than communication. I am more interested in the moment when journalists start asking, "Russian design has influence on the European, it is good or bad?"

In what direction will graphic design be developing? (against the general globalization there will be an international style and nobody would be able to distinguish in what country the design was executed or national traits will remain)

I think it will be not clear from what country is the designer. Our school has very strong retro approach towards graphics. I like it very much it is powerful, beautiful. On the other hand, I am sure that we can expect more global things. There will be something common when everybody will be going in the same direction. It is already happening if we speak, for example, about fashion design. Due to the necessity of being on the cutting edge of things, and everyone looking at each other, it is hard guess the country of manufacturing. And on the other hand, globally, the traits of the countries will remain, because it not so much about school, but about the character of the people, its mentality. A Mexican can never make something like a Scandinavian.

What future awaits the profession? Will it become as stable and prestigious as the lawyer, the economist? Trade union, common quotes, protection of the rights? Is it possible? Is it necessary?

Stability of a profession is a very controversial question. Freelancer receiving at a website 5 orders a month for the last 2 years is stability? And prestige, as for me, it will only harm the result. Completely different energy chains are used. Trade union, as far as I know, was already created in the 90s, with the first wave of studios, but it didn't work out in the end. Generally speaking, I don't think that it is necessary and will appear now – everything is divided into small parts, then gathered into bigger. Then it is divided again. Mobility of the structure and vivacity gives a chance to have interesting results. Trade unions is more about advertising market.

Do you think that design can influence society? What is the role of social advertising in Russia?

I think yes, but influence will be of common culture, like when you walk into the theater, you forget all the bad words. Same here, if it is aesthetic and pleasant to see in the street, people will change. If there is garbage around, then there is garbage in the head. As for social advertising, it is a separate and very serious genre, in my opinion, design plays there a supporting part, idea is out front.

For how many years have you been working as graphic designer?

6 years, if I start counting from the moment I came to the studio.

Why did you become graphic designer?

All children in the childhood are divided into three conventional categories: some go to practice music, others - sports, and the third ones draw. At first there were sports, but it didn't work out, and I went to draw. The understanding that I wanted to work in design came later. It crystallized gradually, with time.

Where and how did you start working in design?

When I was 16-17, I worked at a small publishing house that published brochures about puppies and flowers. There I was making covers for books and planes in Corel for coloring books. It took me 2 years, there were about 30 different pieces on cats, fish and flowers. Without mentioning the strange things as coloring books and children's fairy tales with someone else's bad illustrations. All this was very useful – I've learned to use Quark at 16. I was reading out the first films. I still remember the plaque on the photographic readout: The one who doesn't impose, doesn't eat.

How many hours a day do you work?

I don't know, it depends, I can just sit around without making anything, just a quick sketch, or can stay up for 20 hours. I have a complicated understanding of day and night. It depends mostly on how it goes. Even when I have days off, often I work all the same. Even not as much as on client projects, more on my own, it takes a lot of time, too.

Who are your favorite designers?

Difficult question. I'm often asked, and it is very difficult for me. Why don't you, Protey, just make a list and read off it to everyone. Well, for example, Hayon studio. It's a handsome Italian man, he makes furniture and home accessories. Square furniture of bright open colors. He can thrust 40 legs under a usual dresser and all of them will be of a different shape, he creates art objects this way, he also makes toys that look like syphons. I recognize by and large all artists, photographers, illustrators and designers from the Internet. Also I understand that I love momentary pictures more than different designers. I don't remember most of the names.

How does your style develop? (on intuition or imitation of favorite designers or…)

Everything changes depending on new tasks. From each new project to the new there are new solutions. From personal to client and vice versa. Something like table tennis, and I am the ball. Keeping thus any traits and taking them further. It is an evolutionary process. It has been like that about three years ago when I stopped everything I was doing at once and started anew. I haven't been drawing anything for three months or so, I was warming up. Now everybody think that I've been drawing geometry all my life, even though at first there were almost linocuts - digital, black and gloomy.

Как вы оцениваете уровень образования в сфере графического дизайна в России?

Большинство тех людей которых я знаю, начинают работать до окончания вуза и к моменту выпуска имеют достаточно большое портфолио. В принципе, этого уже достаточно, чтобы найти студию по душе. С другой стороны это какие-то выборочные факты о конкретных людях, общей обстановки мне отсюда не видно, хотя сам дизайн как профессия все же персональная дисциплина.

На какой стадии развития находится графический дизайн в России в сравнении с другими странами?

А какие бывают? Думаю, что если обращать на дизайн внимание в специально отведенных местах то будет все качественно, если смотреть по сторонам на улице, то все еще много треша. Подумал даже сейчас о том, что это постоянные величины и их соотношение уникально для каждой страны.

Единственное, что точно пока не могу описать это русскую традицию в современном дизайне. Если парой слов охарактеризовать Англию или Францию можно, то с Россией пока не ясно. Слишком много смешано.

На сколько русский дизайн находится под влиянием мирового дизайна? Дизайн других стран оказывает на Русский дизайн сильное влияние (хорошо это или плохо)

Я думаю, что интернет в дизайн-сфере это один большой инструмент копирования и изучения других работ. Не думаю, что русский дизайн сильно зависит только от этого, но факт обмена опытом есть. По мне, так это хорошо, потому что эти потоки наталкивают на новые идеи. И вообще с любой стороны затворничество хуже, чем общение. Мне больше интересен момент, когда журналисты станут спрашивать "Русский дизайн оказывает влияние на европейский, это хорошо или плохо?"

В каком направление будет развиваться графический дизайн? (на фоне общей глобализации будет интернациональный стиль и никто не сможет отличить в какой стране был выполнен дизайн или будут сохраняться национальные черты)

Думаю что будет не понятно из какой страны дизайнер. Наша школа имеет очень сильный момент ретро именно в подходе к графике. Она очень мне нравится, мощная, красивая. С другой стороны, уверен, что стоит ждать более глобальных вещей. Будет что то общее, когда все будут идти вместе в одну сторону. Уже так происходит, если говорить, например, о фешн-сфере. Из-за того, что все должно там быть на острие, и все смотрят на других, то угадать страну-производителя сложно. И с другой стороны, глобально, черты стран сохранятся, потому что это не столько про школу, сколько про характер народа, его менталитет. Мексиканец никогда не сможет сделать как Скандинав.

Какое будущее у профессии станет ли она так же стабильна и престижна как юрист, экономист? Профсоюз есть, общие расценки, защита прав? Возможно ли это? нужно ли?

Стабильность профессии это очень спорный вопрос. Фрилансер на сайте получающий 5 заказов в месяц в течении последнизх 2х лет это стабильность? А престижность, ну так по мне, это только будет вредить результату. Слишком разные энергетические цепочки используются. Профсоюз, насколько мне известно, уже строили в 90-х, вся первая волна студий, но не срослось в итоге. И в принципе не думаю, что нужен и появится он теперь – все разделяется на маленькие части, потом собирается в большее. Потом опять разделяется. Мобильность структуры и живость дает возможность получать интересные результаты. Профсоюзность это скорее к рекламному рынку.

Считаете ли вы, что дизайн может влиять на общество? Роль социальной рекламы в России?

Думаю что да, но влияние будет такое – общекультурное, как когда в театр заходишь, то и слова скверные сразу забываешь. Тут также, если будет эстетично и приятно глазу на улице, то и люди изменятся. Если вокруг мусор, то и в голове мусор будет. А социальная реклама отдельный очен ьсерьезный жанр и по мне, так дизайн там играет все же вторую роль, на первое место выходит идея.

6, если считать с момента, как пришел в студию.

Почему вы стали графическим дизайнером?

Все дети в детстве делятся на 3 условные категории: одни идут заниматься музыкой, другие спортом, а третьи рисуют. Сначала был спорт, но не срослось, и я пошел рисовать. Понимание, что хочется заниматься дизайном появилось позже. Кристаллизовалось постепенно, от случая к случаю.

Где и как вы начинали работать в дизайне ?

В 16-17 лет я работал в небольшом издательстве которое выпускало брошюры про щенков и цветы. Там делал обложки для книжек и раскраски в кореле с самолетами. Провел так 2 года, вышло порядка 30 разных штук кошек, рыб и цветов. Это если не считать странных вещей как раскраски и детских сказок с чужими плохими иллюстрациями. Это все было очень полезно – научился пользоваться кварком в 16 лет. Пленки первые выводил. До сих пор помню табличку в фотовыводе на Ильича: кто не верстает, тот не ест.

Сколько часов в день вы работаете?

Не знаю по разному могу вообще ничего не сделать, только эскиз черкнуть, а могу и 20 просидеть. У меня сложное понимание дня и ночи. Зависит в больше степени от того, как идет. Даже когда выходные дни, часто все равно работаю. Ну даже не столько клиентские, сколько свои проекты, времени много на это тоже уходит.

Кто ваши любимые дизайнеры?

Сложный вопрос. Его часто спрашивают, а он для меня очень сложный казалось бы собери Протей список и его всем зачитывай. Ну, например, Хайон студио. Это итальянский мужчина красивый, делает мебель и домашние аксессуары. Квадратная мебель ярких открытых цветов. Он может под обычный комод засунуть штук 40 ножек и все они будут разной формы и получается арт объектами и еще они делают игрушки похожие на сифоны. Я узнаю по большому счету всех художников, фотографов, иллюстраторов и дизайнеров из интернета. И понимаю, что больше люблю картинки ежесекундные, чем разных дизайнеров. Большинство имен в памяти не остается.

Как складывался ваш стиль? (на интуиции или подражание любимым дизайнерам или…)

Все меняется в зависимости от новых задач. От каждого нового проекта к новому появляются новые решения. От персонального к клиентскому и наоборот. Чем-то похоже на пинг-понг, а я мячик. Сохраняя при этом какие-то черты и неся их дальше. Это эволюционный процесс. И еще было года три назад, когда я все сразу прекратил, что делал и заново начал. Месяца три ничего не рисовал, разогревался. Теперь все думают, что я рисовал геометрию всю жизнь, хотя сначала-то были почти линогравюры цифровые, черные и хмурые.

How does your relationship with the customer works out? Do you take the lead from the customer or try to convince him…

Different things happened. There were times when I hated the project so much that we had to finish our cooperation. Often when the client thinks that he knows how to make design, in most cases it means that there is a fear of something. For example manager in a network agency can be afraid for his job and consequently actively meddle in work. Once our design wasn't accepted, but as a result it all ended well and a new one was taken, it turned out that the first concept didn't work out, because the owner of the business thought that the sign is similar to an award of his grandfather and it bothered him a lot. On the other hand, usually everything happens differently in each case, it is like love. I usually work with medium-sized business – I see all directors, I communicate with them, they are all really nice guys.

With kind of customers are more interesting to work?

Well-mannered and alive. The more so, the better everything turns out.

What inspires you, how your ideas come to you?

They appear on their own, when I see a question. Often the first solution the most successful, and it also happens that while I work on it, the best one appears independently. Even if there are sketches it doesn't mean that as a result a completely different decision will be taken, all this is very situational. Different tasks require different decisions.

What books do you read, what music do you listen? Do you watch TV? Magazines, newspapers?

I almost never read books, sometimes rare issues of magazines, but just to kill time, really. I don't even buy anything, actually. From books the last that was in my bag was "The Petty Demon" by Sologub. I watch movies more often, at least 8–10 a month. I listen to music all the time, though I do not like to have a player at all in the street in summer. The last acquisition in respect of music for the whole day – elevator music and Pig Radio. Also mixes by friends from Idle Conversation. Newspapers - definitely not, and I didn't watch TV, but it appeared a few months ago and sometimes we watch it for 20 minutes, something scary about psychics or an unknown film from the middle. It inspires.

What do you do in your free time as a hobby?

I meet my friends

What is your favorite food, alcohol?

Meat. Vegetables. Whisky. It is my intimate love triangle.

Would you like to live in another country?

Yes and no. Moscow has a very dense and greatly loved social part, friends in large numbers. To me it would suffice to spend a month there and a month here. Another country for me is, first of all, new possibilities, not a way to get out of Russia. For me Moscow is very comfortable, nevertheless.

Do you think life became better Russia in the last 10—20 years?

Precisely

Is there anything that lacks in your life?

Time or superpower to be able to stop time. Visas and free flights to any country would come in handy, too.

Your greatest luck and greatest failure in your life?

I don't know how to separate my greatest luck, a lot of small lucks happen to me. And failure is the same thing as luck, just the other way round. So everything is under control.

If it were possible to start life again, would you become graphic designer?

If I knew, where would it take me? Nevertheless, yes. If I could choose abilities – it would be nice to be able to sing or play the piano.

Как складываются ваши взаимоотношения с заказчиком? Идете ли вы на поводу у заказчика или убеждаете его…

По разному бывало. Было и так что мне на столько не хотелось с вести проект работать, что мы заканчивали. Часто, когда клиент думает что знает как дизайн делать, в большинстве случаев означает что есть страх перед чем-то.Например медежер при сетевом агентстве может бояться за свое место и поэтому активно лезть в работу. Один раз у нас не прняли стиль, в итоге все конечно приняли и хорошо получилось, но первый вариант не прошел, потому что владелец бизнеса считал, что знак похож на орден его дедушки и это сильно его тянуло. С другой стороны, обычно все происходит с каждым по-разному, это как про любовь. Я же со средним бизнесом работаю обычно – вижу всех директоров, общаюсь с ними – это все хорошие ребята очень.

С какими заказчиками интереснее работать?

С хорошо воспитанными и живыми. Чем больше, тем лучше все получается.

Что вас вдохновляет, как к вам приходят идеи?

Они сами появляются, когда вижу вопрос. Часто первый ответ наиболее удачный, а случается, что пока его делаю, лучшее появлятся самостоятельно. Даже если эскизы есть, не означает, что в итоге не появится совершено иное решение, все это ситуативно очень. Разные задачи разные решения.

Какие книги вы читаете, музыку слушаете? Смотрите телевизор? Журналы, газеты?

Я почти не читаю книги, иногда редкие номера журналов, но их просто чтобы время потратить. Даже не покупаю, на самом деле. Из книг последнее, что в сумке было – "Мелкий Бес" Сологуба. Больше смотрю фильмы, в месяц штук 8–10 точно. Музыку слушаю постоянно, хотя летом не люблю плеер даже не улице. Последнее приобретение в плане музыки на весь день – elevator music и Pig Radio. Ну и миксы друзей из Idle Conversation. Газеты точно нет, а вот телевизор не смотрел, а тут появился пару месяцев назад и мы иногда минут 20 посмотрим про экстрасенсов страшное или фильм неизвестный с середины. Вдохновляет.

Что вы делаете в свободное время для души?

Какая Ваша любимая еда, алкоголь?

Мясо. Овощи. Виски. Это мой интимный любовный треугольник.

Хотели бы вы жить в другой стране?

И да и нет. В Москве слишком плотная и горячо любимая социальная часть. Друзья те же самые в большом количестве. Мне бы хватило проводить месяц там месяц тут. Другая страна для меня в первую очередь новые возможности, а не способ избавиться от России. Мне в Москве все же очень уютно.

Как вам кажется Жизнь в России стала лучше за последние 10—20 лет?

Точно

Чего вам в жизни не хватает?

Времени или суперспособности останавливать время. Визы и бесплатные перелеты в любую страну тоже пригодились бы.

Самая большая удача и неудача в вашей жизни?

Непонятно как выделять – моя самая большая удача, что у меня случаются много маленьких удач. А неудача это та же самая удача, только наоборот. Так что все под контролем.

Если можно было бы начать жизнь с начала стали бы вы графическим дизайнером?

Если бы знал, к чему это приведет? Все же да. Если можно было бы выбирать умения – хотел бы уметь петь или играть на фортепиано или пианино.
