«Strictly speaking, it is more than design, after all, taking orders, he dictates his own solutions and can hardly do it differently. Therefore his specialization is fitting – clubs, concerts, fun. But there nothing is impossible for him», – fashion illustrator Victor Melamed writes about him.

In Russia designer is generally more than designer. In the West he can, without a second thought, to draw quietly from cultural and historical tradition. In Russia designer not only has to solve a specific problem, but also to heat the thick cultural permafrost around each project, which is not adapted or keen for beauty and convenience of everyday human life.

One of Protey Temen's projects was literally made for permafrost conditions. It is a series of large cold-resistant banners to cover the peeled fireproof walls in Norilsk, the capital of Subarctic region. They brightened up the life of locals during long, depressive polar nights, cheered them up. Could they be anything else but bright and cheerful?

For the first time I saw a couple of his posters when I was in the Selection committee of «the Golden bee-6» in 2004. He was 20 at the time. He would still come to us at Higher Academic School of Graphic Design and, as I remember, he looked like a Gothic metal punk, manic murderer trying to look like Marilyn Manson. His posters were rather composed, traditional – metaphors in the spirit of the Polish school, easily retold. The same was true for the poster to an action devoted to the 20th anniversary of Chernobyl: a foot kicks out a support from under the globe that sits on a pyramid made of a whale, a turtle and an elephant. Then he got into pop art and abstract art, he found his recognizable style, original and sharp, sometimes really «on the edge». But at the same time his own image became, on the contrary, quite modest and respectable. «Is there a connection?» – I asked Protey.

«When I began, – he answers, – it seemed to me that the metaphor is a key to success. Some years later I understood that it was all nonsense. I totally hate «people as a bomb» types of metaphors, I consider them dull. As for the way I dress, these are all transformations of time. I have never made my image a cult or introduced any cold calculation, so I do not follow the change of desires, but neither do I ignore it. All the same, there has never been any better image than that of New-York artists from the 60s-80s. It is important to be about forty and have wrinkles, so that you have something to talk about».

Now he is barely 28. For eight years he has been in the professional foreground, remaining one of the most interesting and bright visual newsmakers in Russian graphic design. He already gives lectures and workshops, convinces everybody that by means of design one can learn the good and evil, that the design is capable of making our life happier and more beautiful.

He was born in Moscow, went to art schools, studied a little at art and staging department at Humanities Institute of Television and Radio, then a little bit more at the International institute of advertizing. Then he became art director and the face of Zunge Design studio where he worked for seven years, being engaged mostly in club graphics, production of concert, festival posters, corporate identity and design of club spaces. In 2009, together with Dmitry Kavko, he founded art group Gruppa "Krovi". His works were featured in exhibitions in Cuba and in France, in Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Spain, Italy, Poland, the USA. His personal exhibitions as a part of Gruppa "Krovi" were held in Moscow, Novosibirsk, Bordeaux …

But let us continue with questions, perhaps.

How did graphic design appear in your life?

If you start counting from the very first order, it occurred under the patronage of my father. I was 14 at the time. My father believed that if someone can use Photoshop, he should be working on design of his books. So I started making covers of books on aquarium fish. Three years later I was thumbing through the Kak magazine, and I was hooked by Ostengruppe works. It became a turning point in my career choice.

Who can you call your teachers?

As I have already said, Ostens had the greatest influence in the beginning. When I got employed by Zunge Design, Guron was a frequent guest there. His comments were always tactful, but always exact.

Then Internet. I started to learn from Websites of various people that were close in their spirit to me. I can also say that Dima Kavko, my wonderful friend, without knowing, forces me to move further.

Do you see any stages, any logic in your creative destiny?

Consciousness and gradual approach are not my strong sides. About four times my head switched in such a way that I couldn't work for months. I realized that everything I was doing was total shit. Some time later logic appeared, by itself. From purely vector graphics to pseudo–Polish, then I got into linocut, it was replaced sharply by Mexican and Old Russian geometrical patterns, then I started to rumple geometry, too. Now I etch modernism with alkali.

Which of your works today do you consider the most important to yourself?

Definitely, the Passion video project became an important stage. It crystallized the feeling that was held captive for a long time inside of me. Because of its video essence it forced my perception to move also in the area of static graphics. For me it generally turns out this way somehow: I work for a year, then everything breaks, I understand nothing. A month or two pass by, there is a project appearing from thin air as though it itself carries a grain of change. Here it is important not to let it dry up, to water at the right time, on to expose to the sun, figuratively speaking. The same milestone projects were the club Kult, Dobrotarizm, Un Sedicesimo. Each time my little new era. It is interesting to observe, how a forgotten experience emerges, and little methods that seemed silly, perfectly grow into business of the new day.

How would you describe your creative creed today?

Creed is a word that is not in my lexicon. I keep changing and rethinking everything. I am not mature enough for manifestos yet. It is interesting for me to do anything that is attributed to abstract graphics.

Do you see any logic in development of Russian design?

Depends on what years we’re talking about. It is obvious to me that in the 80–90s a major element was missed. And further on went overlapping of the market, which still continues to segment the streams. I think that development of professional environment is only a projection of economic and social changes. Now, on the average, it became better, but the individuality was lost. I review pictures from the 90s and feel nostalgic. It is pleasant to see that in respect of web development and interfaces we are better than the West. But it is a pity that the digital field in printing industry lacks in experts. Well, I do not believe in paper any more. It only has the process and history left.

How do you perceive your own place in this process?

The touching observer. If there is a possibility to touch — I do it. But standard rules of the game in Russian commercial design are absolutely uninteresting to me. I perform my personal projects as an artist, and the commercial design in the same way. Two areas easily intercross. Though, like in a joke, — "only one number, and what a difference."

What traits of Russian design do you consider perspective, worthy of development?

Interfaces. Image graphics. Well, and the most important — emotionality and lyricism. However, they don't let it all get to the market most of the time. Look for it in low–publish and among the artists connected with the fashion in–crowd.

What is the role of graphic design?

It is education. Violent, implanted education. It is fight of soldiers of esthetics where everyone prays to his own god, endowing time, but their arrows all the same do not get to the eyes of the opponent, but of by–standing audience, who, escaping from the war of paradigms, bump with foreheads and fall, fainting from an imaginary surplus of that we as representatives of еру profession, are not yet ready to offer them in sufficient volume.

How the graphic design is connected with other creative areas, with other types of design? Has this role changed recently?

At least it became more available and more widespread. If you look at mass–media, design is almost everywhere in the section "Art/Design". For masses design is such a cool feature. Analog of funny pictures from the Internet. It is city entertainment for the masses. Professionally it remained in its place — for design of objects or graphics all the same they will call the one who is able, if we are talking about a worthy project.

What do you think about magazines and books for iPads? What is your general opinion regarding the animated graphics, images and letters on the screen?

I love it all, I bought iPad in the first wave, I look at beauty on it. There can be no competition of usual design with it. Well, that is, everything, of course, is stabilized, but it is a fact — static can be brought to the screen, but does not go back in any way.

Who are your newsmakers? What sources of information do you consider authoritative?

Well, literally about two weeks ago I realized that my last professional stronghold in identity is BrandNew. I began to browse through Under Consideration only once a month. My field of information is digital mass. Names of authors of pictures that I save with one movement of the cursor are unknown to me, and I see no sense in look for them. There are no authorities for me, generally, I think that now it is easier without them — you connect to esthetically or thematically pleasant stream and just go along with it. A year ago there were about ten websites for daily reading, but I am now bored with them. I feel that time flies, and I need to be doing something, instead of just looking.

What, in your opinion, are the latest tendencies in graphic design?

The thing is, I do not really trust in tendencies. Though, I trust in different markets and areas of communication. If you follow them, lately all of them remained as they were: new–ugly, fashion–luxury, young dynamic company, as–if–self–made. Only now everyone wants to be transformable and modern through it. But this story is five years old now. I am waiting for something new.

What young names in Russian graphic design can you mention?

I love my guys: Dima Kavko, guys from Sila group, Timur Akhmetov. Not that they just appeared, but for a long time we have been going in the same stream. But I love them.

For a long time now you have been giving lectures and workshops. What is for you the most important in design education?

It’s been a long time — I gave my first lecture at 19. What I could tell at the time, I don't know. But now I want to read for an audience less and less, I want more intimacy. I believe that integrated approach is important for design education. It is necessary to know a lot, so that even if you cannot make it yourself, you knew where you can go and whom to ask.

What would you like to wish to students, young designers?

I wish they would look for harmony between commerce and expressional "I am an author". It is exactly in the area of young design I see this border now, these are people of absolutely different outlooks. And I would like to see less polarity, and more multiculturalism.

There is plenty of empty space to work peacefully in the chosen niche. It is possible even to start copying what you like, to make it your starting point, all the same it will be in your own way. We have Slavic mentality, it can overcome any style with its internal brutality.
